Technivorm Moccamaster-KBGT : The Review

Web Holiday Guide

Netherlands is known for many things including an authentically chilled environment (puff puff), cycling, canals and even waffles, but an area that sometimes gets overlooked is its love for great coffee. More specifically, being home to one of the best home brewer brands on the market Technivorm Moccamaster.

An Ultimate Coffee maker

Filter brewing can be a chore at times and every little helps when either brewing for yourself or others to nail that god brew each and every time. In our case we were looking for a way to brew for customers in our coffee shop on a small batch brew scale with equipment that doesn’t always get the limelight it deserves. Our weapon of choice….the Moccamaster KBGT, which cried out for a review once we got our hands on it.

The Product Review

Before getting into the nitty gritty there’s a couple of things you need to know about the brand to show they mean business. First off the Moccamaster is a specialist in its field of automatic filter brewers. They’ve been manufacturing for many years and all of their equipment is hand made and tested in their motherland of the Netherlands. For me this shows they care about their products from the skill and time they take to build that give a sense of personal touch. This already sets the bar high for the Moccamaster KBGT but regardless of that our personal experience was our main performance indicator so with out further a do I bring you the Moccamaster KBGT review.

Moccamaster

POSITIVES

  • Great build quality. Made from completely recyclable but strong materials including steel, aluminium, plastic and glass make it completely BPA free.
  • Improved design on previous models that includes a thermal steel flask that can retain heat and keep coffee tasting good for an hour before going noticeably stale.
  • Quick brew time. The KBGT can produce 10 cups worth of coffee in bulk (1.2 litres) that can be brewed within a fast 6 minutes due to an effective copper heat element.
  • Clever design. The KBGT can keep accurately boiled water at temperatures of 92-96 degrees for a consistent and ideal brewing temperature. An automatic drip stop function also restricts spillage from the brew basket when brewing or when the steel flask is removed for pouring.
  • Highly automated. Literally add the water and coffee grounds and away you go.
  • The Moccamaster KBGT has been certificatied by a speciality coffee governing body AKA the Speciality Coffee Association (SCA).
  • Every model comes with a 5 year warranty for consumer confidence.

NEGATIVES

  • Priced in excess of £190 may seem expensive to some and for home brewing for one this could be deemed as overkill.
  • As with many electrical metal coffee brew systems (Espresso machines included) they require maintenance. That being said Moccamaster replacement parts are easily accessible.
  • Potential room for improvement. As much as the thermal flask does its job retaining heat when sealed, an air pot insulated thermal flask can retain heat as as well pour coffee. Take note Moccamaster.

The Ultimate Coffee Maker?

I struggled to find fault with the Moccamaster KBGT and as our first purchase from Technivorm I can highly recommend it. Although the price may seem excessive for me it shows outstanding value for money combining a well built, aesthetically pleasing and great coffee making brewer. There’s a reason why Moccamaster is held in high regard and the KBGT is a clear example of this in the world of automatic drip brewers. Not many brewers can compete on the same level as the Moccamaster KBGT for its price, quality and consistency, which makes me comfortable contemplating getting another one for a 2 on the go combo at our coffee shop.
